Joe Mecca

In a ceremony hosted by the RPRS held Tuesday evening, Coastal Credit Union’s Joe Mecca was honored at the 2017 Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Excellence in Communication as the 2017 Public Relations Pro of the Year.

In his role as Assistant Vice President Communication, Joe serves as company spokesman, and is integral to the credit union’s public relations, corporate communication and political affairs functions. When he’s not working to build up Coastal’s public profile, Joe’s focus is on ensuring that employees and members are kept well-informed. He also lends his talent to several key committees at Coastal and is on the board of the credit union’s charitable foundation.

“Over the past year alone, Joe has strategically planned and communicated a number of major milestones for Coastal, all done with excellence and precision. A big part of Coastal’s ongoing PR success comes from his challenge to its leadership to ‘do more newsworthy things’,” says Kelly Propst, Raleigh Public Relations Society Board President. “Coastal is embraced by its membership and well-recognized for its efforts in the community, all stories that Joe has helped to tell. We are thrilled to honor him with the inaugural RPRS PR Professional of the Year Award.”

In the past year alone, Joe has led Coastal’s communication efforts for several complex, challenging and noteworthy projects, any one of which would have been a crowning achievement for a typical year. In doing so, he exemplified what it means to be a strategic planner and effective communicator. Among them:

  • He led the internal, member and public communication around Coastal’s merger with Freedom Credit Union.
  • Joe was instrumental in working alongside Coastal’s marketing team to secure the naming rights for the Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek.
  • In the fall of 2016, he was a central part of Coastal’s Visa credit card conversion project, a monumental communication effort, both to employees and members.

“In Joe’s 13 years at Coastal, he has proven that the PR function is integral to the success of all internal, member, and public-facing communication,” says SVP, Chief Retail Officer, TJ Wyman. “He is a trusted advisor to our CEO and the entire senior team as well. Coastal congratulates Joe on this well-deserved achievement.”

The Sir Walter Raleigh Awards are a showcase of exemplary work by Triangle public relations and communication professionals the ceremony is presented annually by the Raleigh Public Relations Society. Last night’s event was held at The Cannon Room at HQ Capital Club in downtown Raleigh.
